Teaching and Learning
Developing a love of reading at Weelsby Academy
As children learn to enjoy books one of their first goals is to master the mechanics of reading. At Weelsby Academy we use the Read Write Inc programme to support our teaching. Read Write Inc. Phonics is complete literacy programme, for 4 to 7 year-olds learning to read.
For more parent information the link below will allow you to read how it is delivered and watch demonstration videos.
Roald Dahl once said "I have a passion for teaching kids to become readers. To become comfortable with a book, not daunted. Books shouldn't be daunting, they should be funny, exciting and wonderful and learning to be a reader gives a terrific advantage".
From its conception to its current success in schools, Big Reading's driving force has always been for all children to learn to become readers. The term 'reader' means to us, more than to be able to decode. To be a 'reader', children should find books funny, exciting and wonderful; a rich source of amusement, entertainment, escapism, information as well as thought-provoking and, at time challenging.
At Weelsby Academy we agree with this and believe that a reader should engage with a text for meaning and personal development. We therefore follow the Delta Reading Strategy. Every year group from Year 1 - Year 6 study a high quality text, in depth, for a term. This book is changed every term and the children get the opportunity to paticpate in high quality discussions in small groups as well as whole class.
We use a range of reading schemes and real books to further develop children’s reading skill.
Children who are accessing RWI will have a RWI book as their home reading book to help build fluency and have a book that helps reinforce the sounds they are learning. Once the children have comleted the RWI programme, they will move to books which continue to develop fluency and comprehension.
